TLDR Keloids are strongly linked to atopic dermatitis and other health issues.
This study assessed the association between keloids and atopic dermatitis in a diverse patient population using data from the Johns Hopkins Hospital System. Among 4,877,856 patients, 3,527 were diagnosed with keloids, with a significant proportion being black (59.51%). Keloids were strongly associated with atopic dermatitis (OR 16.11, p <0.0001) and asthma (OR 6.11, p<0.0001). Additionally, patients with keloids had increased likelihoods of hypertension, chronic hepatitis, HIV infection, diabetes mellitus type 2, chronic kidney disease, and ischemic heart disease. The study suggested mast cell overactivity as a potential mechanism and recommended further research into the association between keloids and atopy.
