TLDR Keloids significantly reduce quality of life, and treating symptoms should be prioritized.
The study assessed the impact of keloids on quality of life (QoL) in 64 individuals with keloids compared to 27 healthy controls. Using the Short Form 36 (SF-36), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), and visual analog scales (VAS) for pain and itch, it was found that participants with keloids had significantly decreased QoL. 47% of individuals with keloids reported moderate or greater QoL impairment (DLQI score >5). Pain and itch were strongly associated with greater QoL impairment, with DLQI scores similar to those of other skin conditions like acne, alopecia, and vitiligo. The study concluded that keloids significantly impact QoL, and symptom relief should be a treatment priority.
