TLDR A 1-day or 3-day itraconazole treatment is effective for acute vulvovaginal candidosis, but recurrent cases may need longer treatment.
Itraconazole, a systemic triazole antifungal, was evaluated for treating vulvovaginal candidosis in 60 patients, with 34 having acute and 26 having recurrent infections. Patients received either a 1-day regimen (twice 200 mg in 1 day) or a 3-day regimen (200 mg daily for 3 days). Cure rates 1 month post-treatment were 97.1% for acute cases and 76.9% for recurrent cases, with relapses in the latter group not due to yeast resistance. Side effects were minimal, except for one case of alopecia areata. Long-term and suppressive azole therapy was recommended for recurrent cases.
