TLDR Men with early hair loss and hormonal changes like PCOS could be the male equivalent of PCOS, not linked to metabolic syndrome.
This study aimed to investigate whether male androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is a sign of the male equivalent of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or metabolic syndrome. The researchers analyzed a group of 30 men with premature hair loss and examined their hormonal profiles and insulin tolerance. They found that there were two subgroups within the group: one with hormonal changes similar to women with PCOS and the other without anomalies in steroid spectrum. The subgroup with hormonal changes resembling PCOS showed higher insulin resistance. Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that men with premature alopecia and hormonal changes similar to PCOS may represent the male equivalent of PCOS rather than being associated with metabolic syndrome.
