TLDR Many Iraqi women with hirsutism also have hypothyroidism and acne.
This retrospective study examined 100 Iraqi women with hirsutism, focusing on clinical and biochemical characteristics. The average age was 26.9 years, and the mean BMI indicated overweight status. Clinically, 55% had oligomenorrhea, 39% had acne, and 6% had alopecia. Biochemically, 90% had elevated TSH levels, indicating hypothyroidism, and there were increases in DHEAS (37%), total testosterone (72%), and prolactin (35%), though the latter two were not severely elevated. Additionally, 40% of participants had a family history of hirsutism. The study highlights the prevalence of acne and alopecia as associated features and the commonality of hypothyroidism among the participants.
