TLDR Finasteride may increase iris billowing risk during surgery, similar to tamsulosin.
The study investigated intraoperative iris behavior in 26 Metis male rabbits treated with tamsulosin or finasteride during phacoemulsification maneuvers. The rabbits were divided into three groups: control (6 rabbits), tamsulosin (10 rabbits), and finasteride (10 rabbits). The research found an increased risk of intraoperative iris billowing in rabbits treated with finasteride, similar to those treated with tamsulosin. However, the statistical significance was not achieved for either treatment compared to the control group. The study suggested that further experimental or clinical studies were needed to confirm the role of finasteride in the etiology of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome in humans.
