TLDR Intralesional pentoxifylline effectively and safely treats alopecia areata, improving hair regrowth.
This study assessed the safety and efficacy of intralesional pentoxifylline in treating alopecia areata in 50 patients. The treatment resulted in significant improvements, including a reduction in empty hair follicles from 64% to 36% and an increase in upright regrowing hair from 36% to 70%. The mean SALT score decreased from 11.72 to 3.06, with 46% of patients achieving complete scalp hair regrowth. Side effects were minimal, and 54% of patients reported high satisfaction. The study concluded that intralesional pentoxifylline is an effective, safe, and well-tolerated treatment for alopecia areata, though it noted the need for larger studies due to the small sample size and short follow-up period.
