TLDR Androgens reduce macrophage receptor expression, affecting immune response, while antiandrogens counteract this effect.
The study investigated the effects of androgens and antiandrogens on macrophage Fcgamma receptor (FcgammaR) expression using a guinea pig model. It was found that androgens, including testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, mesterolone, and danazol, impaired the clearance of IgG-sensitized erythrocytes by decreasing splenic macrophage FcgammaR expression, with dihydrotestosterone and mesterolone being more effective than testosterone. Flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy showed that androgens reduced the cell surface expression of FcgammaR1,2 more than FcgammaR2. Antiandrogens did not significantly change macrophage FcgammaR expression but counteracted the effects of androgens. The findings suggested that androgens, except for danazol, could be potential therapeutic agents for immune disorders by modulating macrophage FcgammaR expression.
