TLDR Hair follicles regulate immune cells in the skin, and disrupting certain pathways can lead to skin issues and infections.
The study explored the role of hair follicles as regulators of immune cells in the skin, highlighting their production of chemokines and cytokines essential for immune cell localization. Disruption of specific signaling pathways, such as the ADAM17-EGF receptor and ADAM10-Notch axes, led to skin dysbiosis, with Staphylococcus aureus causing atopic inflammation and Corynebacterium species leading to hair follicle destruction. The research also examined the hypodermis, finding that macrophage depletion in this layer protected mice against S. aureus-mediated cellulitis. Additionally, the study discussed ongoing research into Degos disease, a rare and fatal condition.
