Inhibition of 5α-Reductase, IL-6 Secretion, and Oxidation Process of Equisetum Debile Roxb. ex Vaucher Extract as Functional Food and Nutraceutical Ingredients
January 2017
TLDR Equisetum debile extract may help with hair loss by inhibiting enzymes and reducing inflammation.
The study investigated the biological activities of Equisetum debile extracts, focusing on their potential benefits for hair loss by inhibiting 5α-reductase, reducing IL-6 secretion, and providing antioxidant effects. Various extracts were tested, with the ethyl acetate extract (EA) showing the most promise due to its high inhibition of lipid peroxidation (57.2%) and lack of cytotoxicity on dermal papilla cells or irritation in a hen's egg test. The ethanolic extract (ET) had the highest total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Overall, EA was identified as the most attractive ingredient for functional food and nutraceuticals aimed at addressing hair loss.
