TLDR Orbital decompression surgery for Graves' orbitopathy caused double vision in 19% of patients, with similar rates for two surgical methods.
In a retrospective analysis of 81 patients with Graves' orbitopathy who underwent orbital decompression surgery, the study found that the overall incidence of induced diplopia was 19%, with no significant difference between the coronal decompression (20% incidence) and translid decompression (14% incidence) groups. Postoperative strabismus surgery was required in 25% of patients, and high satisfaction scores were reported for both surgical approaches. The study highlighted the need for a standardized protocol for orthoptic evaluation to better compare outcomes between different decompression techniques. Factors such as pre-operative motility impairment were important in determining the incidence of diplopia.
