TLDR Systemic minoxidil improves hair density in women with female pattern hair loss over time.
This retrospective study evaluated the long-term efficacy of systemic minoxidil in treating female pattern hair loss (FPHL) in 51 women over at least 3 years, with 34 having 5-year follow-up data. The study found that after 5 years, 64.7% of patients achieved a 1-point reduction in Sinclair grade (SG), indicating improved hair density, while 29.4% maintained stable SG. The 7-point scale showed significant improvement in midline hair density after 1 year (P = .017). Side effects included facial hypertrichosis in 45% of patients. The study suggests that systemic minoxidil leads to stabilization or improvement in hair density over time, although it is limited by its retrospective design, small sample size, and lack of a control group.
