TLDR Different diagnostic criteria greatly affect PCOS diagnosis rates in teenagers.
The study investigated how different diagnostic criteria affect the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in adolescents. It included 52 female patients aged 13-18 years with symptoms such as irregular menstruation and hyperandrogenism. The patients were diagnosed using six different sets of criteria. The results showed a wide variation in diagnosis rates, with 100% diagnosed under the Rotterdam criteria but only 65.4% under the Pediatric Endocrine Society criteria. The study concluded that the choice of diagnostic criteria significantly influences the diagnosis of PCOS in adolescents, with broader criteria potentially leading to overdiagnosis and stricter criteria possibly missing some cases. This suggests the need for careful consideration in diagnosing PCOS during adolescence.
