TLDR Using cidofovir cream for a rare skin disease can cause skin darkening.
A 52-year-old immunosuppressed female with trichodysplasia spinulosa (TS), a rare skin disease caused by the polyoma virus, was treated with topical cidofovir 3%. Although the TS symptoms, which included a painful midfacial eruption and alopecia of the eyebrows, resolved, the treatment led to hyperpigmentation in the affected area. This side effect of hyperpigmentation has been previously noted with cidofovir treatment for molluscum contagiosum but had not been reported for TS treatment. The case is presented to bring attention to this potential adverse effect of topical cidofovir in TS patients.
