TLDR Iraqi women with PCOS often have higher testosterone levels and obesity.
This study investigated the prevalence of hyperandrogenism in 80 Iraqi women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared to 20 healthy controls, using the Rotterdam criteria for diagnosis. It found that women with PCOS had significantly higher body mass index (BMI) and increased prevalence of overweight and obesity compared to controls. Serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone were significantly elevated in PCOS patients. Clinical signs of hyperandrogenism, such as hirsutism and alopecia, were common among PCOS women, with a higher prevalence in obese individuals compared to those who were overweight or lean. Acne was a less reliable indicator of hyperandrogenism in this population.
