TLDR Hair loss caused by longer latent hair cycle and sudden miniaturization, not gradual follicle size reduction.
This document is a response from authors to criticisms of their study on hair density, hair diameter, and female pattern hair loss. They defend their methodology and interpretation of data, and suggest that hair loss is due to a prolongation of the latent period of the hair cycle followed by abrupt miniaturization, rather than a gradual reduction in follicle size. They also discuss the distribution of hair diameters in women with low hair density and those with high hair density, and suggest that the increased proportion of small diameter hairs in women with low hair density is due to a relatively greater reduction in the absolute number of large diameter hairs.
