TLDR Honey applied to wounds speeds up healing and improves tissue repair.
In 2016, a study was conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology and Banerjee's Biomedical Research Foundation to investigate the regenerative potential of honey in wound healing. The study involved 10 male Swiss albino mice, each with two full-thickness wounds. One wound was treated with povidone-iodine (control) and the other with honey. The results showed that the honey-treated wounds had a significantly reduced total wound area compared to the control, indicating accelerated wound healing. Histopathological techniques revealed improved histological features and increased collagen density in the honey-treated wounds. The study concluded that topical application of honey promotes wound healing through appropriate wound contraction and re-epithelialization.
