TLDR High insulin levels may increase the risk of pilonidal sinus disease in female teens.
This retrospective study investigated the relationship between insulin resistance and pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) in female adolescents. It included 30 adolescent girls with PSD and a control group of the same size. The study found that 83.3% of the patients were insulin resistant, with a strong correlation between PSD and high insulin levels (mean±SD 19.46±7.28; p<0.05) and elevated HOMA-IR scores (mean±SD 4.59±1.87; p<0.05). The results suggest that high insulin levels and elevated HOMA-IR scores may lead to excessive hair growth through hormonal pathways, indicating that hyperinsulinemia is a risk factor for PSD development in female adolescents.
