TLDR Rat skin develops from a single layer to adult-like skin with hair follicles by day 21.
The study examined the histological changes in rat skin during pre- and postnatal development using light and transmission electron microscopy. In the prenatal group, the epidermis evolved from a single layer at day 12 to multiple layers by day 21, with significant stratification and the appearance of keratohyalin granules and hemidesmosomes by day 19. In the postnatal group, the skin resembled adult skin by day 21, with distinct collagen fiber organization and a decrease in epidermal thickness from day 3 to day 21. Hair follicle development was observed, progressing through early, mid, and late anagen phases, with a typical hair follicular layer evident by day 21. The study provided detailed insights into the structural development of rat skin, which could aid future research.
