Hirsutism

    Carole Gilling-Smith
TLDR Hirsutism, excessive hair growth in women, often caused by high androgen levels and polycystic ovary syndrome, can be treated with medication and weight management.
Hirsutism, characterized by excessive terminal hair growth in females in a male pattern, was primarily triggered by hyperandrogenaemia, with genetic and metabolic factors influencing its severity. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) was identified as the most common cause, with elevated serum testosterone levels (>5 nmol/l) necessitating further investigation for adrenal pathology or androgen-secreting tumors. Treatment varied based on the underlying cause, with cyproterone acetate and oestradiol being effective for PCOS or idiopathic hirsutism, and metformin as a secondary option. Weight reduction to achieve a normal BMI was crucial for effective therapy.
