TLDR High-dose oral minoxidil can improve hair growth but may cause side effects.
This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of high-dose oral minoxidil (HDOM) for treating androgenetic alopecia in 57 male patients over at least 9 months. The majority of patients (86.1%) received a daily dose of 10 mg. Results showed that 45.6% of patients experienced a 10-30% improvement in hair density, while 17.5% saw improvements greater than 50%. However, 24.6% of patients reported new adverse effects, primarily hypertrichosis. The study suggests HDOM can be an effective option for some patients resistant to conventional therapy, though the small sample size and focus on men limit the generalizability of the findings. Further research with larger, more diverse samples is recommended.
