TLDR Heavy metals in personal care products can cause serious health issues like cancer and hair loss.
The mini review highlighted the potential risks associated with heavy metals in personal care products and facial cosmetics, which are used daily by millions. Despite skin's protective role, some ingredients can penetrate and cause systemic exposure, leading to chronic health effects such as cancer, dermatitis, developmental and neurological disorders, brittle hair, and hair loss. The review emphasized the need for better consumer awareness, stricter enforcement of existing regulations, and rigorous assessment of their effectiveness, especially in low-income countries where standards are lacking. Notably, metals like Cd, As, Pb, Hg, and Sb are highly toxic, while Cr, Ni, and Co are known skin sensitizers.
