TLDR Non-medical steroid use in gym-goers is risky and needs better prevention and care strategies.
This case report focuses on a 38-year-old male recreational bodybuilder with anabolic androgenic steroid dependence, who developed severe health issues, including anabolic steroid-induced cardiomyopathy (ASIC) and hypogonadism (ASIH), despite comprehensive harm-reduction measures and cessation of steroid use. The patient ultimately died from a cardiovascular event, highlighting the persistent and significant cardiovascular risks associated with long-term androgen use. The report underscores the urgent need for integrated medical and harm-reduction approaches, early detection of cardiovascular risks, and reassessment of legal and clinical measures to optimize care and prevention strategies for individuals affected by non-medical androgen use. It also emphasizes the complexity of managing androgen dependence and the necessity for further research into effective treatments and diagnostic criteria.
