TLDR Artificial dermis used for hair transplantation can reconstruct scalp defects effectively without the need for tissue expansion.
In the study referenced by Nicole E. Rogers, MD, the authors successfully used PELNAC artificial dermis as a recipient site for follicular unit grafting to reconstruct significant scalp defects in three cases. This technique offers a good solution for patients with sufficient donor hair, providing an alternative to tissue expansion, which requires skin grafts, significant morbidity, and recovery time. The artificial dermis used in the study is not known for tissue contraction, yet it helped to shrink the size of the recipient area, reducing the area requiring hair transplantation. This method is beneficial for patients who cannot undergo tissue expansion and prefer new hair growth during the healing of the underlying scalp. The use of artificial dermis for reconstructive hair transplantation could be helpful for many patients globally. The number of people in the study was three.
