Characteristics of Patients with Hair Loss After Isotretinoin Treatment

TLDR Higher doses and longer use of isotretinoin may increase hair loss risk.
This retrospective study examined the characteristics of patients who experienced hair loss after isotretinoin treatment. Out of 6,330 patients with hair loss, 48 had been prescribed isotretinoin between 2013 and 2018, and 19 of these experienced hair loss concurrently or within 2 years of treatment. The study found that patients who developed hair loss were generally older, had higher cumulative doses, and longer treatment durations compared to those who did not experience hair loss. The study suggested that dosage and duration might be linked to hair loss, although the exact mechanism remained unclear. The findings were intended to aid in counseling patients concerned about hair loss when considering isotretinoin treatment. Limitations included the small number of affected cases and the retrospective nature of the study.

community Tretinoin for some men(not all) can cause non-telogen effluvium hair loss

      in Research/Science  6 upvotes 4 months ago
Tretinoin can cause non-telogen hair loss in some men by inducing catagen-like changes in hair follicles and through retinoid toxicity, especially when used with minoxidil. Some users report hair loss even when using retinoids on the face, while others experience benefits when combined with treatments like finasteride and minoxidil.

Accutane may accelerate hair loss in genetically predisposed individuals by affecting enzymes related to DHT metabolism. Some users report hair loss after taking Accutane, while others use treatments like finasteride and minoxidil to manage hair loss.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

community Androgenetic alopecia is a skin disease: DHT-mediated skin disorders

      in Research/Science  61 upvotes 2 years ago
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.
