TLDR Fish oil improves hair growth in diabetic and high-cholesterol rats.
The study investigated the effects of fish oil on hair growth in diabetic and hypercholesterolemic male Wistar albino rats. Forty rats were divided into 8 groups, including control, fish oil-supplemented, diabetic, hypercholesterolemic, and combinations thereof. After 12 weeks, hair shaft analysis showed that diabetes and hypercholesterolemia led to reduced hair shaft thickness, altered amino acid profiles, increased protein carbonylation, and glycation end products, as well as disrupted keratin formation. Fish oil treatment improved hair morphology, amino acid content, and reduced harmful protein modifications, suggesting that its n-3 fatty acids have antioxidant properties and support hair shaft formation by aiding epidermal regeneration.
