TLDR Nothopanax scutellarium leaves can promote hair growth but may mildly irritate the skin.
The study, conducted 6 years ago, investigated the safety and hair growth promoting activity of the ethyl acetate fraction of Nothopanax scutellarium leaves. The safety test was conducted using the Hen’s eggs-chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM) method, while the activity test involved applying a hair tonic of the ethyl acetate fraction on rabbits and measuring hair length over three weeks. The results showed that 0.2 gram of the ethyl acetate fraction of N. scutellarium leaves had a mild irritation effect. However, formulations containing 0.5% and 1% of the fraction increased hair growth and hair diameter. Therefore, the ethyl acetate fraction of N. scutellarium demonstrated hair growth promoting activity, despite a mild irritant effect.
