TLDR Chinese Han individuals have fewer hair follicles and hairs than Caucasians and Africans.
The study evaluated hair distribution in 146 healthy Chinese Han individuals and 41 with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). It found that healthy Chinese Han had an average of 74.36 follicular units (FUs) per cm² and 143.33 hairs per cm², with no significant gender differences. In AGA patients, the averages were slightly lower, particularly compared to the occipital scalp of healthy individuals. The predominant follicular unit type was two-hair FUs (52.62%). The study concluded that Chinese Han had fewer FUs and hairs compared to Caucasians and Africans, providing valuable data for hair transplantation planning and evaluation in this population.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Scalp tension from the occipitalis muscle is theorized to contribute to hair loss, but most believe DHT and genetics are the main causes. Treatments like finasteride and minoxidil are considered more effective than addressing scalp tension.
