Haemostatic and Biocompatibility Evaluation of Alginate-Functionalized Polylactide Composite Containing Zinc Sulphide and Hardystonite

    The study evaluated a novel composite material, PLA-ALG-ZnS-HT, for its haemostatic potential and biocompatibility in blood-contacting applications. The composite, which includes polylactide (PLA) modified with sodium alginate (ALG), zinc sulphide (ZnS), and hardystonite (HT), demonstrated increased surface area and pore volume. Haemostatic testing showed prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) due to Zn2+ interactions, indicating potential anticoagulant properties. Biocompatibility tests revealed high cell viability and no genotoxic effects on human cells, suggesting the composite's safety for biomedical applications. The findings highlight its promise for advanced wound care and blood-contacting uses.
