TLDR Hyaluronic acid-based HA2 hydrogel helps heal skin wounds better with less scarring.
In the 2018 study, researchers developed two hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogels, HA1 and HA2, and tested their effectiveness in repairing full-thickness skin wounds in New Zealand white rabbits. The study monitored wound healing over 56 days using various methods, including wound area measurements, white blood cell counts, and histological and immunohistochemical analyses. The results showed that the HA2 hydrogel was the most effective, significantly improving wound healing and skin regeneration with less inflammation and scarring compared to HA1, HA powder, and cotton dressings. HA2 hydrogel promoted the expression of beneficial proteins such as VEGF and α-SMA while reducing TGF-ß1 expression, leading to improved healing outcomes. The study concluded that HA2 hydrogel has potential as a promising treatment for wound healing and skin regeneration with minimal scarring.
