TLDR GSH-T levels in hair follicles are similar in smokers and non-smokers and don't increase with certain treatments.
A fluorometric assay was used to measure glutathione-S-epoxide transferase (GSH-T) activity in human hair follicles and cultured cells. The study found no significant difference in GSH-T levels between smokers and non-smokers. Additionally, GSH-T levels did not increase after treating cultured hair follicle keratinocytes with benz[a]anthracene or clotrimazole, nor in cultured skin fibroblasts from both Ah-responsive and Ah-non-responsive mice. The study discussed the potential importance of basal GSH-T levels in assessing the risk of carcinogenic effects from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
