TLDR A 7-year-old girl's scalp infection was cured with oral medication and medicated shampoo.
A 7-year-old girl was diagnosed with gray patch tinea capitis, a scalp infection caused by the fungus Microsporum canis. The patient had a 2-month history of itching and a round scaly patch on her scalp, along with alopecia and visible short, dull hairs. The infection was confirmed through a Wood lamp examination, which showed blue-green fluorescence, and a KOH prep of the scalp and infected hair that revealed hyphae and spores. The patient was treated with oral micronized griseofulvin 375 mg daily and topical ketoconazole 2% shampoo three times a week for 8 weeks, which resulted in complete clearance of the infection both clinically and microscopically.
