TLDR GLP-1 receptor agonists can cause skin and hair issues due to rapid weight loss, but these can be managed with proper care and treatments.
GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs), used for type 2 diabetes and obesity, can cause dermatological side effects like "Ozempic face," skin sagging, dehydration, and hair loss due to rapid weight loss. These effects stem from nutrient deficiencies, mitochondrial dysfunction, and hormonal changes rather than direct drug action. About 12% of patients experience hair loss, often reversible with treatments like nutritional supplements and minoxidil. Mitigation strategies include maintaining hydration, balanced nutrition, and using skincare products such as ceramide-rich moisturizers and retinoids. Healthcare providers should consider co-management with dermatology specialists to address these issues.
