TLDR Certain genes influence immunoglobulin levels in Chinese Holstein cows, which can improve calf health.
This study conducted genome-wide association studies (GWASs) on 620 Chinese Holstein cows to identify genetic factors influencing immunoglobulin concentrations in colostrum and serum, which are crucial for calf health. Using ELISA methods, the concentrations of various immunoglobulins (IgG, IgG1, IgG2, IgA, and IgM) were measured, and significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. The study found 20, 1, and 4 significant SNPs associated with IgG2, IgA, and IgM concentrations at a genome-wide level, and additional SNPs at a suggestive level. These SNPs were linked to 1,083 genes involved in immune response pathways. The research identified 21 candidate genes, such as ABR, TIMM22, and AKT1, which could be pivotal for genetic improvements in dairy cattle's immune traits.
