TLDR Copper may protect against alopecia areata, while certain inflammatory markers increase risk.
This retracted study explored the genetic exposure to alopecia areata using Mendelian randomization analysis, involving 64,979 to 460,351 European ancestry participants. It identified an inverse correlation between copper levels and alopecia areata risk, suggesting copper's protective role due to its antioxidant properties. Specific serum metabolites were also inversely correlated, indicating their involvement in metabolic pathways affecting hair health. Conversely, inflammatory markers like transforming growth factor-alpha and interleukin-2 receptor subunit beta were positively correlated with increased risk, highlighting their role in immune-mediated hair follicle destruction. The study calls for further research to clarify these causal mechanisms and address limitations such as genetic tool effectiveness and population representativeness.
