TLDR The dog's skin condition improved with treatment, but full recovery wasn't achieved, and environmental cleaning is advised to prevent re-infection.
The article reports a case of generalized dermatitis in an 8-year-old mixed-breed German Spitz dog caused by Sarcoptes scabiei infestation and Malassezia sp. infection. The dog exhibited severe pruritus and alopecia, along with hyperpigmentation, licenification, crusting, ulceration, scales, and a rancid, oily odor. Diagnosis was confirmed through skin scrapings and cytology, revealing the presence of mites and yeast. The dog was treated with ivermectin injections and fluconazole, along with lime sulfur and salicylic acid shampoo, multivitamins, ferrous gluconate, and fish oil for supportive care. After 14 days of treatment, the dog's skin lesions improved, though full recovery was not achieved. Environmental sanitation is recommended to prevent re-infection.
