The study from Madras Veterinary College, conducted from May 1 to May 30, 2017, involved 220 hospitalized dogs with dermatological disorders in Chennai, India. It found that the most common clinical signs were pruritus (86%), alopecia (63%), scaling (77%), and maculo-papular-pustular lesions (91%). The most prevalent conditions diagnosed were Malassezia dermatitis, Demodicosis, Scabies, and Tick infestation, with Tick infestation being the most common. Various treatments were used, including systemic antibiotics (9% of cases), antifungal drugs (7%), glucocorticoids (10%), antihistamines (6%), and ectoparasiticides (73%). The study also noted that mange mites were more common in dogs with poor body condition, the prevalence of canine atopic dermatitis was 2.27%, cutaneous adverse food reactions were observed in 6.81% of cases, and flea allergic dermatitis was present in 9.10% of cases. The findings underscore the need for population-based studies and public health policies to manage skin diseases in dogs.
