TLDR The dog's skin and anemia issues returned after stopping treatment for Babesia gibsoni.
A 12-year-old female Satsuma dog with generalized alopecia and progressive anemia was diagnosed with Babesia gibsoni infection. Initial treatment with antibiotics and prednisolone was ineffective, but antiprotozoal therapy led to temporary improvement. Histopathology suggested early leukocytoclastic vasculitis or ischemic vasculopathy. Symptoms relapsed after stopping treatment, indicating a strong link between skin lesions and babesiosis. This case emphasized the importance of considering chronic babesiosis in differential diagnoses of cutaneous vasculitis in endemic regions.

Hair loss is linked to cellular physiology and the IGF-1 to TGF-B1 ratio, not just androgen sensitivity. The theory lacks evidence, while finasteride and minoxidil are effective treatments.

Increased Malassezia and Cutibacterium in the scalp microbiome are linked to higher sebum production and inflammation in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Treatments include ciclopirox shampoo, benzoyl peroxide shampoo, clobetasol propionate, calcipotriol, minoxidil, finasteride, and dutasteride.

Derma rollers may cause scarring alopecia, leading some to prefer dermastamps or dermapens for microneedling. Combining minoxidil with microneedling is effective, but proper technique and healing time are essential to prevent damage.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
