TLDR Meniran extract hair tonic may stimulate hair growth in rats, with the version containing 1% menthol being more effective.
In 2018, Luliana, S., Desnita, R., and Rawinda, R. conducted a study on male white rats to determine the effectiveness of a hair tonic made from the ethanol extract of Meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L.) in promoting hair growth. The tonic, which was non-irritating to the skin, was applied topically to the rats and observations were made on hair length and weight. The study found that the tonic promoted hair growth, with the presence of quercetin and phenols in the tonic preventing hair loss and inhibiting the 5α-reductase enzyme. Two formulas of the tonic were tested, with Formula 2 (containing a 1% concentration of menthol) resulting in greater hair length than Formula 1, although both were less effective than minoxidil, a known hair growth stimulant. The study concluded that P. niruri has potential as a hair growth stimulant, with Formula 2 being more effective than Formula 1.
