TLDR Folliculitis decalvans and tufted folliculitis are related, and a new treatment with rifampicin and clindamycin is effective.
In a study of 18 patients with folliculitis decalvans at the Oxford hair clinic, 8 exhibited tufted folliculitis. The study found no significant differences in clinical presentation, disease progression, or histological findings between those with and without tufted folliculitis, suggesting they are part of a disease spectrum. Despite investigating immune response through lymphocyte staining, no local immune suppression was identified. A new treatment regimen of oral rifampicin and clindamycin for 10 weeks was introduced, with 10 patients showing no recurrence 2-22 months post-treatment, and 15 responding after multiple courses.
