TLDR The cream-mask and gel-mask with certain plant extracts improved hair growth in rats similar to a common hair growth treatment.
In 2019, Fedorovska, Polovko, and Antymys conducted a study on the follicle stimulating activity of a cream-mask and gel-mask with Serenoa repens dry extract (SRDE) and Sophora japonica tincture on an androgenic alopecia model in rats. The study involved daily injections of testosterone in adult male rats for 10 days, followed by daily application of the developed medical cosmetic remedies (MCR) and a comparative drug (2% solution of minoxidil) on the animals' shaved area for 21 days. The effectiveness of the MCR was evaluated by measuring the mass of new rat fur and conducting a morphometric analysis of hair follicle density. The results showed that the rat fur mass from the shaved skin of the animals treated with the MCR significantly exceeded that of untreated animals and was comparable to animals treated with the referent drug. Histologic studies also confirmed that the intensity of hair follicle growth restoration in the experimental groups was significantly higher than the control group. Thus, the study concluded that the developed cream-mask and gel-mask with SRDE and Sophora japonica tincture showed a clear follicle stimulating effect.
