TLDR Finasteride may reduce prostate tumor cell invasion and spread.
The study examined the effects of finasteride, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, on prostate cancer (PCa) prevention. While the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial showed a significant reduction in PCa incidence among finasteride-treated patients, it also reported a significant increase in aggressive, high-grade PCa cases in the same group. This led to debates among medical professionals about whether finasteride induced these aggressive cancers. The FDA responded by prohibiting finasteride's use as a chemopreventive agent due to the increased risk of serious PCa forms, highlighting the complexity of its role in cancer prevention.
