TLDR Finasteride can slow hair loss and promote growth in postmenopausal women.
A study from 19 years ago investigated the effectiveness of oral finasteride in treating pattern hair loss in postmenopausal women without clinical or laboratory signs of hyperandrogenism. Five patients were treated with daily doses of 2.5-5mg of finasteride, and all reported a slowing down of hair loss within 6 months of treatment. Patients 1, 2, 4, and 5 also reported noticeable hair growth within 6-12 months of treatment. The treatment was well-tolerated by all patients, and no significant safety concerns were identified during the study. The study suggests that oral finasteride may be an effective treatment for patterned hair loss in postmenopausal women.
