TLDR PPCM microspheres can effectively release finasteride over 42 days.
The study investigated the use of poly(propylene carbonate maleate) (PPCM) as a carrier for finasteride in sustained release microspheres. These microspheres, prepared using an oil-in-water emulsion solvent evaporation method, had a mean diameter of approximately 2 μm. It was found that increasing the proportion of finasteride increased drug loading but decreased encapsulation efficiency, with optimal values of 14.78% drug loading and 66.17% encapsulation efficiency at a polymer-to-drug mass ratio of 5:1. In vitro testing in a pH 7.4 phosphate-buffered solution showed that the microspheres could prolong drug release up to 42 days, achieving a cumulative release of 92.59%. The drug release followed the Higuchi matrix model, indicating that PPCM was suitable for long-term sustained release drug delivery systems.
