TLDR A man had a rare stroke possibly due to taking finasteride, which might have increased his hormone levels causing a blood clot. His memory loss didn't fully recover even after stopping the medication.
In 2015, a 46-year-old man developed cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT), a rare form of stroke, after taking 5 mg of finasteride daily for two years for benign prostate hyperplasia, and an additional 1 mg daily for hair loss for one year. The finasteride was suspected to have increased the patient's levels of estrone and estradiol, potentially leading to a blood clot. After discontinuing finasteride and starting on dabigatran 110 mg bid, the patient's symptoms did not worsen, but his short-term memory loss had not fully recovered three months after discharge. The authors called for more research to establish a causal relationship between finasteride use and blood clot formation.
