TLDR Finasteride, a hair loss medication, was found to be safe and effective in improving hair quality and stopping hair loss in men with early-onset baldness.
This study investigated the use of finasteride, a medication commonly used to treat hair loss, in men with premature androgenetic alopecia (AGA). A group of 26 men with early-onset hair loss were treated with a daily dose of 1 mg of finasteride for 3 months. After the treatment, hormonal profiles were measured and compared to the pre-treatment levels. The study found that the ratio of dihydrotestosterone to testosterone significantly decreased after the treatment, indicating a positive effect on hair loss. Additionally, 17 out of the 26 men reported improvements in hair quality and a halt in hair loss, with no side effects. Eight men did not experience any treatment effects, and one man experienced mild gynecomastia and discontinued the treatment. Overall, the study suggests that finasteride at a dose of 1 mg can be a safe and effective option for controlling androgenetic alopecia in men with early-onset hair loss.
