TLDR Dutasteride 0.5mg was found to be more effective than finasteride 1mg in treating male pattern hair loss, with similar side effects.
In a study conducted by Gubelin Harcha W et al. in 2014, it was found that dutasteride 0.5mg was superior to finasteride 1mg in treating male androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study, which lasted 24 weeks, involved a high number of participants (917). Dutasteride, a less selective inhibitor of type I and type II 5-alpha reductase (5AR) enzymes, was compared to finasteride, a selective inhibitor of type II 5AR. The results showed that dutasteride 0.5mg/d was more effective in treating AGA and had the same rate and severity of adverse events as finasteride. This led to the suggestion that dutasteride could be considered as an additional established therapy for AGA, pending future approval by local health authorities.
