TLDR A girl with lupus had unusually long and thick eyelashes, a rare symptom of her condition.
The document reported a rare case of a 16-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who presented with eyelash trichomegaly, diffuse hair loss, and "lupus hair." Eyelash trichomegaly, characterized by increased length, curling, and pigmentation of eyelashes, is typically associated with congenital syndromes or acquired conditions like HIV or drug use, but its occurrence in SLE is rare. The patient exhibited symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, and sunlight sensitivity, and had been intermittently taking oral prednisolone. Laboratory tests confirmed SLE, and the patient was referred for further management. The pathogenesis of trichomegaly remains unclear, but it may involve inhibition of EGFR signaling in eyelash hair follicles.
