TLDR Improving scalp health is key to managing dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are linked to a disrupted scalp barrier, causing irritation, itching, and flaking, which can affect self-esteem and quality of life. Although the exact cause of dandruff is not fully understood, the health of the scalp barrier and its microbiome are believed to be crucial in the disease's progression. Five expert dermatologists developed consensus statements based on a systematic literature review and discussions, emphasizing the importance of scalp health in managing dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. These statements highlight the need to shift the focus of treatment towards overall scalp and hair health to improve patient comfort and prevent flare-ups.
