TLDR Improving scalp health is key to managing dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD) affect about half of the global population and are linked to a disrupted scalp barrier, leading to irritation, itching, and flaking. These conditions can significantly impact self-esteem and quality of life. The exact cause of dandruff is not fully understood, but the health of the scalp barrier and its microbiome are believed to play crucial roles. An expert panel of five dermatologists developed consensus statements emphasizing the importance of focusing on overall scalp and hair health in managing dandruff. The panel highlighted the need to address challenges in promoting scalp health, improving patient comfort, and preventing flare-ups. The consensus suggests a shift in treatment approaches to prioritize global scalp health.
