TLDR A rare skin condition causes red and dark patches on the face and limbs.
Erythromelanosis follicularis faciei et colli (EFFC) is a rare dermatological condition characterized by well-demarcated erythema, hyperpigmentation, and follicular papules, typically affecting the maxillary and preauricular regions. This case report described a 12-year-old boy with EFFC who also exhibited unusual reticulated hyperpigmentation on his extremities. Histopathological examination revealed features consistent with EFFC, including follicular keratin plugging and basal layer hyperpigmentation. The etiology of EFFC remains unknown, though genetic factors such as autosomal recessive inheritance and spontaneous mutations have been suggested. Treatment options are limited and often result in recurrence of lesions. This case was notable for its rarity and the unique presentation of reticulated pigmentation on the limbs.
